Guided by the promptings of the holy spirit, ever active in the life of the church, Cardinal Jose F. Advincula, fondly known as Bishop Joe, discerned for the need for a new missionary community. At that time, he was serving as the Bishop of the Diocese of San Carlos. It was during this period that he proposed to Fr. Prex Fajardo the establishment of a community of missionaries  dedicated to administering and teaching in Diocesan schools, caring for elderly and sick priests, and carrying out various spiritual and corporal works of mercy.

Thus, in January 2010, the Merciful Missionaries of Saint Joseph (MMSJ) was founded an inspiration worth remembering, especially since the young community began with very limited resources for its formal establishment.

A first sign of divine providence came during Fr. Prex's Sacerdotal Anniversary on March 19, celebrated of the feast day of the Saint Joseph, the community's patron and protector. On that very day, Saint Joseph provided the initial seed money for the mission's operations. This moment became a powerful sign that the Saint Joseph would be the strength and guide of the community a it persevered in this Holy endeavor.

 

After his service, in San Carlos, Bishop Joe was later appointed as Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Capiz, and eventually elevated to the college of Cardinals. Today, the MMSJ continues its mission under the Archdiocese of Capiz  through the Merciful Missionaries of St. Joseph formation house in Barangay Cagay, Rocas City, forming senior high schools students and brothers in Philosophy and Theology
